This iconic, almost Heath Robinson-esque instrument, was the past's answer to satellite navigation. From its inception in 1767, it would take over 200 years before it was phased out in the 1970s. Before the sextant, captains would lick their index finger and raise it in the air. Legend has it that this is how the Vikings found England.Highlights
